About Natalie MacMaster
Natalie MacMaster has spent more than 35 years establishing herself as one of the defining figures in Canadian Celtic and traditional fiddle music, transforming the sound of Cape Breton fiddling from a regional East Coast tradition into an internationally celebrated performance style. Raised in Troy, Inverness County, Nova Scotia, MacMaster began playing fiddle as a child while surrounded by the deep musical heritage of Cape Breton Island, an area known worldwide for preserving Scottish Gaelic musical traditions. She released her debut album, Fit as a Fiddle, in 1989 while still a teenager, and quickly gained national attention for her combination of technically precise fiddling, energetic live performances, and traditional step dancing. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, albums such as No Boundaries, In My Hands, and Blueprint helped expand her audience far beyond the folk scene, leading to performances alongside artists including The Chieftains, Alison Krauss, Faith Hill, and Carlos Santana. Her marriage to fellow fiddler Donnell Leahy further connected two of Canada’s most respected musical families, and together they have toured internationally with their children in productions that blend virtuosic musicianship with storytelling, dance, and East Coast cultural traditions. MacMaster has earned multiple JUNO Awards, East Coast Music Awards, and Order of Nova Scotia honours while remaining one of the most recognizable ambassadors of Cape Breton music in the world.
